Alaska's Garden

On Nord-Långö in Strömstad’s archipelago lies Alaska – a unique garden estate created in the 1920s by Hilma Svedal (1870–1965). After nearly 30 years in America, where she earned her living as a gold prospector in Alaska, she returned home and built her own little paradise. Today, the area is a nature reserve and a popular destination for both hiking and picnics. Feel free to bring swimwear – there are great swimming spots nearby.

Stone and Flower Garden
Hilma created her stone and flower garden inspired by her years in America. Together with local masons and stonecutters, she built a fairy-tale miniature landscape out of Bohuslän stone, seashells, and cement. Here, you’ll find terraces, pavilions, stairs, bridges, walls, and lookout towers winding through the rocky landscape. Hilma drew inspiration from American villa gardens, and their colourful floral splendour made a deep impression on her.

The Journey to the Garden
If you don’t have your own boat, you can take the archipelago boat to Alaska on Nord-Långö. During the summer months, there are regular departures from Nordhavnen in Strömstad, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. For prices and departure times, visit Selin Charter.

Alaska for Businesses
Alaska is also well suited as a unique element in conferences and events. Take a break from meetings and enjoy fresh air among flowers and stone sculptures in the beautiful garden.
