Koster Islands
Koster Islands are one of Sweden’s sunniest places and a paradise for nature lovers. The almost car-free islands outside Strömstad lie in one of the country’s most unique marine national parks and form part of a rich nature reserve with diverse wildlife both on land and in the sea.
Take the ferry
The popular islands of Nord-Koster and Syd-Koster are part of a larger nature reserve, and the Koster boats run daily from Nordhavnen in Strömstad. You’ll find the timetable on Västtrafik’s website, and during the summer a staffed cable ferry connects the north and south islands.
Explore the islands
We believe Koster Islands are best experienced at your own pace. Several marked hiking trails bring you close to nature. On Nord-Koster, there are shorter loops of around five kilometers. Don’t miss the famous Klapperskär fields with their rounded rock formations, or the views from the lighthouses on Högen, the highest point on Koster Islands. Here you can read more about hiking on the islands.
You can also explore the area from the seat of a bicycle and roll through beautiful, distinctive coastal landscapes. Rent a bike or bring your own – there are several rental locations in Ekenäs, Kilesand, and Långagärde. Here you’ll find a bike map of the islands and more information about cycling on Koster.
Kayak and snorkel
Kosterhavet National Park offers world-class kayaking. The best time to paddle is in spring and late summer, when the sea is calm and the birdlife more tranquil. The entire area is accessible for short stops and refreshing swims. Several local operators offer kayak rentals with options for lessons and guided day trips. If you want to learn more about paddling, we have gathered information here.
Locally produced food
In addition to fresh fish and shellfish, you’ll find several organic farms and small shops on Koster Islands. They offer locally produced goods such as vegetables, fruit, meat, and handicrafts – all made with a strong connection to the local area.
We welcome you to Koster Islands – a place for genuine culinary and nature experiences.
