Koster Islands

Koster Islands is one of Sweden's sunniest places and a paradise for nature lovers. The nearly car-free islands outside Strömstad are located in the middle of one of the country's most unique marine national parks and have a nature reserve with a diverse animal and plant life both on land and in the sea.

Take the ferry

The popular islands Nordkoster and Sydkoster are part of a larger nature reserve and Koster boats run daily from the Northern Harbor in Strömstad. You can find the timetable on Västtrafik's website, and during the summer you can also travel between the islands with the help of a staffed cable ferry.

Explore the islands

The Koster Islands are best explored at your own pace. Here you will find several marked hiking trails that bring you close to nature. On Nordkoster, there are shorter loops of about five kilometers. Don't miss the well-known cobblestone fields with their round stone formations and the view from the lighthouse at Högen, the highest point of Koster Islands.

You can also experience the area from the saddle of a bike and roll through beautiful landscapes. Bring your own bike or rent one - there are several rental places in Ekenäs, Kilesand, and Långagärde.

Paddle and snorkel

Kosterhavet National Park offers world-class kayaking. The best time to paddle is during the spring and late summer when the sea is calm and birdlife is quiet. Throughout the area, there are spots where you can stop for a moment and take refreshing swims. Several local operators offer kayak rentals with options for lessons and guided day trips.

Locally produced food

In addition to fresh fish and seafood, you will find several local farms and small shops on Koster Islands. They offer locally produced ingredients and crafts such as vegetables, fruit, and meat from the island's own producers.
